$27M later, lottery winner says he’s keeping his job

Published: June 3, 2008

Doug and Liz Kinsman had to check their winning $27- million ticket five times before they believed it.

After a long sleepless night and a final check at a lotto location yesterday morning, the Toronto couple claimed their prize at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.’s downtown prize centre.

The couple bought the ticket Friday, just before the $27-million Lotto Super 7 draw, part of their Friday night routine for the last 10 years.

Doug Kinsman said he played the same numbers every time up until a year ago when he lost them and has played quick-picks ever since.

And talk about a good pick.

“It really was,” he said with a smile yesterday after accepting the cheque.

A real-estate agent who specializes in selling Muskoka cottages, he says he’s not going to quit work anytime soon.

“I love it,” Kinzman added.

And they won’t be buying a bigger cottage, either.

“Maybe we’ll finish the one we’ve got,” said Liz, who works for an insurance agent.

The couple didn’t know they’d won until checking their numbers on Sunday afternoon. “He reads the numbers and I circle them,” Liz said.

This time, she just kept circling.

‘IT WAS QUIET’

Once she had circled all the numbers, the pacing started.

“It was quiet,” Liz said. “You can’t believe it.”

After they were done, they checked the numbers again online and at two different locations where lottery tickets are sold.

The couple has been married for 39 years and have two grown children — a son and a daughter.

“They do pretty well but they’re going to do a lot better now,” Doug said.

Having raised a son with epilepsy, the couple said they plan to donate to causes that benefit those with epilepsy as well as to St. Michael’s hospital.

They’re also planning to have some fun — a Christmas cruise for the whole family and buying a new car.

Doug also wanted to get caught up on his sleep after spending Sunday night pondering the win.

“I didn’t get any (sleep Sunday) night,” he said. “I just wanted morning to come.”
