Mother’s Day miracle for Avon Lake mom
Published: May 15, 2008
A weekend car accident on I-90 outside Conneaut claimed the lives of six vacationers, but spared the life of a young mother from Avon Lake.
“I feel I had a guardian angel on my shoulder, saying it’s not my time,” Melanie Cesnick said, “because I have a beautiful daughter, I am young and I’m 25. I have a whole life ahead of me.”
The accident occurred just over the Pennsylvania border.
Officials there say that a minivan carrying a group of Indian computer programmers and their wives to a Niagara Falls vacation flipped and crashed in western Pennsylvania, killing six of seven people on board.
Cesnick was coming back to Avon from a weekend with family and friends in Erie, Pa.
“I saw this minivan making a U-Turn and knew I was going to hit it,” she said. “I said to myself, ‘calm down, relax’. I didn’t want broken bones.”
She suffered no broken bones — just a few scrapes and bruises.
Two days later, the fatalities and the magnitude of the accident that’s being called the worst in the area in decades, is still sinking in.
Today, with her five-year-old next to her, Cesnick looks at photos of the wreckage that took six lives but spared her own.
“I think I’m still in shock, because everyone calls me a miracle,” she said. “And I don’t feel like a miracle right now.”
