Children shop with a cop
Published: December 3, 2007
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department and the Moberly Police Department teamed up to help 10 area children have a merrier Christmas by taking them shopping Saturday.
Sheriff Mark Nichols said he had been part of a Shop with a Cop program a few years ago when it was sponsored by the Missouri Deputy Sheriff’s Association. The Association is divided into regions with this region covering 22 counties. Since the program encompassed such a wide area, not all counties could receive funds each year although Sheriff Nichols was able to bring it to Randolph County twice and Chariton County once.
Wanting to help more local children, Sheriff Nichols contacted Moberly Police Chief Dennis Cupp and local businesses. Three businessmen, whom Nichols said want to remain anonymous, donated funds so 10 children could purchase coats, hats, gloves, shoes and, of course, toys.
Nichols said there are services in the county that help families in need. However, there are some families who, for some reason or another, do not receive the help they need. Ten children were selected to take part in the program this year.
Sheriff Nichols, deputy sheriffs, police detectives and officers each took a child and went throughout Wal-Mart with them to help pick out the desired items on their wish list. Each child was allotted $150 to spend. While picking out coats and shoes was fun, especially for the younger children, choosing toys was the most fun, and most difficult.
Following their shopping excursion, the children and their parents were taken to Pizza Hut for lunch.
Thanks go out to all who helped provide the children with a brighter holiday season.
