Fireman dad rescues baby

Published: November 6, 2007

AN OFF-DUTY fireman told yesterday how he saved his baby after a fire-work went through her bedroom window.

The 14-month-old had been put to bed by her mother at their home in Slatyford, Newcastle, on Friday, just minutes before the firework shattered the glass of the window beside her cot.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said two males had been arrested for arson with attempt to endanger life and had been released on bail for further inquiries following the incident.

The baby’s mother, a civil servant said the family had been left terrified by the attack and were too afraid to be identified.

The 34-year-old said: “We had just put her to bed at about 6.50pm when we heard an almighty explosion.

“Then there was another bang and we heard the shattering of glass.

“My husband was straight up the stairs and picked our baby out of her cot.

“From the stairs all I could see was the room filling with light.

“There was a bright green light as the firework whizzed around the room and the carpet was on fire where the firework landed.” The baby girl’s father, a 34-year-old fireman who was off duty at the time, passed his daughter to her mother and began cleaning up the room.

Fighting back tears, the mother said: “Thank god my husband knew what to do as he is a fireman.

“I thank my lucky stars our daughter was sleeping the way she was.

“She was at the far side of the cot away from the window cuddled in a ball. She usually sleeps at the window.

“When I looked at the cot in the morning that side was covered in glass.

“I don’t know how she didn’t wake up.”

The baby’s dad said: “When I go to work I just think about doing my job. But now I’m on the other side and it’s my own family.

His wife said: “I will never think about fireworks in the same way.

“I don’t think the public should be allowed to have them to let off.”

The little girl was taken to hospital but had suffered no ill-effects.
