10-Year-Old Hero Saves Mom, Neighbor
Published: October 26, 2007
A 10-year-old girl has been called a hero, credited with saving two women, including her mother.
Trina Harris said that she and her daughter, Jasmine, went to a neighbor’s home in Fredericksburg for a birthday party.
Jasmine and the woman’s two children were asleep in a bedroom at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday when the woman’s estranged husband, Jason Hicks, broke into the home, police said.
After entering the home, the man tied up Harris and her neighbor, beat them and burned them with cigarettes. The man then got both women out of the house, loaded them into a van and drove off.
The neighbor, Mia Camino, said she credits Jasmine’s call to 911 with saving her life.
“He wanted to leave us in West Virginia, leave our bodies up there, and there’s no don’t in my mind that he would’ve done it,” said Camino.
Jasemine found an old cell phone in a closet and the phone was miraculously still charged. The service had been disconnected but the 911 function still worked, News4’s Derrick Ward reported.
Jasemine then called police and gave them a description of the van. Police were able to locate the van a short time later.
Both of the women were treated and released from a local hospital.
Hicks was arrested and is awaiting trial.
