Humbling awards for hospital’s heroes

UK — A HEALTHCARE assistant, a porter and a heart surgeon are among the people shortlisted in the hospital’s trust’s Celebrating Success Awards.
The Gazette-backed awards, designed to recognise and pay tribute to the hard work of staff at Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Trust, will be presented at a ceremony at the staff ball next month.
There were more than 100 nominations received across seven categories.
A judging panel, made up of the trust’s chief executive Julian Hartley, chairman Beverly Lester, Unison rep Steve Holmes, medical director Dr Paul Kelsey, chairman of the hospital’s Patient and Public Involvement Forum, Maureen Horn and Gazette reporter Emma Harris, met at Victoria Hospital to come up with a shortlist in each category.
Mr Hartley said he was very impressed by the standard of entries.
He said: “I think the judging was a really difficult job. It was very tough selecting the winners between what was a very impressive range of individual and team achievements.”
Beverly Lester added: “I think there has been much more interest in the awards that I thought there would be. It highlights all the excellent work that people are doing, particularly in the testimonials from patients. I personally found it very humbling.”
Maureen Horn, chairwoman of the Patient and Public Involvement Forum, said: “I enjoyed the judging panel day. I think it’s time that we did start celebrating that we have a lot of good work going on in our hospitals.”
