Have-a-go heroes hold man after assault

UK — TWO have-a-go heroes chased a thug who left a woman needing hospital treatment after an assault.

A 37-year-old man assaulted the woman, believed to be his partner,before fleeing the scene,but the brave onlookers caught and held him until police arrived.

Blood from her injuries stained the pavement and police cordoned off part of High Street for more than two hours to examine the scene.

Officers scanned the ground with a torch and marked the drops of blood, which were still clearly visible three days later.

The incident happened outside Ask restaurant during England’s defeat to South Africa in the rugby World Cup final.

A police spokesman said: “A domestic assault took place in the High Street at just before 8.30pm on Saturday October 20. “The suspect was pursued by two members of the public,who detained him until police arrived.

“A 37-year-old man man from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was arrested and charged. He appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court on Monday October 22.

“The victim sustained cuts and attended hospital as a precaution. An area of Crawley High Street was cordoned off during the evening to allow police to make some enquiries.”
