Hero saves family from burning house

Published: October 22, 2007

UK — A family were rescued from their burning house in the early hours of Saturday thanks to quick-thinking neighbours.

Karl Goodband had gone to New Row, in Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, at around 5am to pick up his brother-in-law Mick Thomas for their early shift at Padleys in Grantham.

Karl, who lives in the village, told Mick he thought there were flames in the lounge of a house two doors away and went to check it out.

A storage heater had caught fire and Karl, 31, went about alerting the occupants of the house - a mother, her son and a dog - and the rest of the neighbours.

Mick, who rang the fire service for help, said: “Karl evacuated everyone without a thought for his own well-being.

“In our eyes he is a true hero and we are all so proud of him. I don’t think he realises just how his actions saved a lot of lives that day.

“If he hadn’t been there and did what he did it could all have ended very differently.”
