72 yo neighbor rescues pensioners from fire

UK — Two pensioners stuck while fire raged upstairs at their Shropshire home were rescued by their heroic 72-year-old neighbour.
Fred Maund, believed to be 80, and his wife Nancy, in her late 70s, were alerted to the smell of smoke at their house in St Julian’s Avenue, Ludlow, yesterday.
Mrs Maund went to neighbour Dorothy Jennings to say she could smell something before returning home as Mrs Jennings called the fire brigade at 8.55pm.
“I was told to get them out, but they were very reluctant to leave the house,” said Mrs Jennings. “The fire started in their airing cupboard and although we couldn’t see any flames there was a lot of smoke.
Several windows were damaged in the blaze, as was much of the Maunds’ property. The couple, who have been married for more than 50 years, have lived in the house all their married life, but are now staying with Mrs Maund’s sister in Kennett Bank, Ludlow.
“I should think it will be about six weeks before they are able to go back to the property,” said Mrs Jennings. “Nancy was very emotional about it and all the neighbours were so good rallying round.”
Firefighters also tackled a cooker fire in Meese Close, Dothill, Wellington, Telford, at 4pm yesterday.
