Airman making miracle recovery after 12 month coma
Published: August 30, 2007
UK — A WREXHAM airman who survived a mystery roadside incident, which left him in a coma for months, is battling back
Greg Vickers was left fighting for his life in Borras Park, in September, 2005.
He suffered serious head injuries and spent several months in a coma. A partial recovery meant he was able to return home in December, and the rate of his progress since then has been a revelation.
And now keen sportsman Greg is even back at the crease, playing cricket under the supervision of coach Paul Cartwright.
Paul said: “In the six weeks I have been working with Greg, I have seen a big difference. He is coming on all the time and it is amazing to see.
“What happened was terrible, and, of course, it has changed his life, as well as his family’s. Fortunately, he was a good sportsman before what happened, so that has helped a great deal.
“It is all coming back to him, but it is hard with the brain injury he received. His co-ordination is getting there, but that is still a problem.
“It must be quite frustrating for him, not quite being able to do what he could before, but when you think about how he was back then it is amazing.”
Although he has made big strides, the road to recovery remains a long one for Greg.
Paul said: “It is just a matter of time and it is a slow process, but it is
very encouraging to see him out there. Hopefully he will keep progressing, and he was in a coma for a few months, so any progress is fantastic to see.”
Coming into the situation from outside Greg’s immediate circle, Paul said he had been given an insight into how important his family, particularly dad Ron, mum Eileen, and brother Lee, were in helping him get back on his feet.
He said: “He has the encouragement of his family, which I know is such a massive help to him.
“Nia Williams of the brain injury unit which helps him has also been so important. There are a lot of people supporting Greg, and that is what he needs.”
Police have not yet been able to establish how Greg sustained his horrific injuries. He was found in Borras Park in the early hours of September 16 last year.
