Teen hailed as hero after rescuing neighbor

After he helped a neighbor escape a burning mobile home Saturday, 17-year-old Robert Vandermeulen was being hailed a hero by family and friends a day later.
Vandermeulen, who turns 18 Monday, ripped open a locked screen door at 3901 Vail Ave. in the Alpine Meadows mobile home park about 11:45 p.m. Saturday to help a 55-year-old neighbor who was incoherent and struggling to get out.
John Przybylo suffered burns to his hands, feet and a thigh from the fire and was at Spectrum Health Blodgett burn center in critical condition Sunday. Alpine Township fire investigators still were looking for a cause Sunday.
Vandermeulen downplayed his role in the rescue.
“I hope that anybody would have done the same thing,” he said.
