Americans Gave Almost $300 Billion to Charity in 2006

Published: August 15, 2007

Setting a new record for generosity, Americans donated about $295 million to charity in 2006, up 1 percent from 2005, when the previous record was set, the Associated Press reported June 25.

Unlike 2005, however, giving was not driven by a major event like the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

The data comes from the Giving USA Foundation’s annual report on charitable giving.

“What people find especially interesting about this, and it’s true year after year, that such a high percentage comes from individual donors,” said Giving USA Chairman Richard Jolly. Individuals gave three of every four dollars donated to charity — even more if bequests are counted. About one-third of individual donations go to religious organizations.
