Twelve-year-old Sidney Samborski received an award Thursday for the bravery she displayed when a fire broke out in her Oakville townhouse last winter.
The courageous young girl boldly took charge of the situation, saving her mother and family dog from a potential deadly situation.
“My mom is really afraid of fire so I had to like take control,” she admits.
“I felt the door and it was warm and my mom was about is to go downstairs and I went, ‘no, mom.’
Michael Harrison, an Oakville fire prevention officer, was impressed with her quick response to the emergency.
“She knew what to do. She knew she had a goal, to get everybody out.”
Sidney was at home on her computer in January when the smoke alarm sounded. She calmed her mother, grabbed the dog and got them all out of the house.
“I knew to call 911 outside because inside it’s just wasting time,” she said.
