81-Year-Old Man Makes 2,000-Mile Bike Trip for Charity

Published: August 9, 2007

According to the Yuma Sun, before Bill Anderson, 81, of Yuma, Arizona, dies, he wanted to do one more thing. He wanted to go on a 2,000-mile bicycle ride around the entire perimeter of Arizona. Last Tuesday he finally set out for the journey. Plus, with the tip-top shape he’s in, and with former experience, it’s already been a piece of cake.

Anderson plans to complete his 2,000 mile bike ride within 14 to 16 days and so far it has been going well. What is great about his trip is that he is not only doing it for himself, but for Yuma’s Crossroads Mission. When he completes the 2,000-mile trip, he will raise tons of money for Crossroads Mission that provides food, clothing, shelter, and showers to many homeless people in the area, reported the Yuma Sun. Anderson chose to donate every cent to Crossroads Mission because he dealt with homelessness as a child. He also stated that he is paying for all his expenses himself.

Last year, Anderson rode from the Mexican border to Canadian border and back to raise more money for local charities. Then back in 2004, he went on his first trip from Canada to Mexico and then a different ride from San Diego, Calif., to Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

As previously stated, Anderson set off for his most recent trip around the perimeter of Arizona on Tuesday. His route included hitting Page, Ariz., on Saturday then to the cities of Eagar, Safford, and continuing along the Mexican border to return home, said the Yuma Sun.

Although the 2,000-mile ride will take him up to 16 days and he has had to face windstorms, he would clearly not have it any other way. Anderson told the press on the phone, “It’s so awesome. I’m having a blast… I’m seeing a lot of new country and taking lots of scenic photographs.” Anderson also reported to the Yuma Sun that there have been no problems with his bike, only his chase vehicle.
