Teen Hero Speaks About Dramatic Rescue

Published: August 8, 2007

Ivana Burnell and her three young children were asleep when a fire broke out in their home last week.

When her pitbull, Lexi, smelled the smoke and started barking, Burnell woke up and realized she and her children were trapped on the second floor of the burning house.

Burnell said all she could do was stick her head out the window and yell for help.

Neighbor Jake Tardiff said he heard the yells and said he didn’t even think before springing into action.

Tardiff said he ran to Burnell’s burning house and had Burnell pass her children out a second-floor window to him.

Tardiff said he grabbed a ladder and began punching the glass out of the window, trying to clear more room for Burnell to escape through. When his fists alone weren’t enough, Tardiff’s friend David Nicasio handed him a rock and then an ax to smash the stubborn pane.

Burnell was able to escape the house and climb down the ladder. Burnell said if it weren’t for Tardiff, she and her children might not be alive.

Investigators said one of Burnell’s children accidentally started the fire.
