Woman, 90, rescued from burning home

Published: August 2, 2007

Australia — A 90-year-old woman has been rescued by a neighbour from her blazing home in Melbourne’s east.

The woman was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and shock after fleeing the bungalow in Gunyah Road, Blackburn North, just after 11.30pm last night, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said.

An occupant of a house on the same property raised the alarm and rushed to the woman’s aid before fire crews arrived, Vermont South station officer Wayne George said.

“If they hadn’t got her when they did it probably would’ve been a very different situation,” Mr George said. “She’s very lucky.

“There was a smoke alarm … but it didn’t appear to be working.”

The bungalow was well alight when crews arrived and it sustained severe damage, Mr George said.
