Peacock rescued from the surf

Published: August 2, 2007

Ireland — Those familiar with the sea should be able to recognise most seabirds, but last Thursday evening’s tide brought in a most unusual feathered visitor to Courtown.

Beachgoers enjoying a rare day of sunshine got a shock when they spotted a peacock struggling in the surf.

The drenched bird was eventually washed in to the beach.

Courtown Lifeboat crewmember Áine Stafford was finishing a Wexford Water Safety class in the harbour, when a woman came up from the beach seeking assistance.

The Lifeboat crew have rescued people, dolphins, and even inflatable whales, but never a peacock.

While the Lifeboat didn’t launch on the evening, Áine enlisted the help of Lifeboat Operations Manager Sam Kennedy, Deputy Launch Officer of the Lifeboat Tom Byrne, and Jim Murphy of Courtown Coastguard to try to round up the bedraggled bird which was clearly in distress.

Many of the children watching on the beach were also upset, fearing the bird would drown.

However, the rescuers managed to coax the peacock up onto the pier.

They phoned Kia Ora Mini Farm to seek advice on how to safely capture the bird, and using a blanket, they safely got the exhausted bird with its long feathered tail, into the back of a jeep.

Efforts were made to find out who owned the bird but to no avail.

Premises where peacocks are known to reside, including Seafield Hotel, Marlfield House, and Kia Ora Mini Farm confirmed none of their birds were missing.

However the O’Donoghues at Kia Ora offered to give the bird a good home, and he is reported to be doing well in his new, drier surroundings.
