Hero helped four flee house blaze

Published: August 1, 2007

UK — A HERO neighbour helped a family escape their burning home after arsonists set fire to a car on their driveway.

The fire broke out on a driveway in Winston Drive, Isham, at about 2.25am yesterday morning.

The blaze ignited a second vehicle on the drive and then spread to the house.

The family of four were helped from the house by neighbour Stuart Reid who raised the alarm.

Mr Reid, 27, lives with his parents in Ryehill Close – which is behind Winston Drive.

His mother said: “I think he’s so brave, he’s my hero – I’m certain he saved four lives.

“If the fire didn’t get to the family I am sure the smoke it caused would have. He heard an explosion and went to see what had happened.

“Then the second car caught fire and the blaze spread to the house.”

A family support vehicle and the Northamptonshire Police arson taskforce joined firefighters at the scene.

Forensic officers also attended the property later in the day.

Gordon Dring, 76, of Fairfield Road, said: “My wife woke me up when she heard the explosion.

“We could see the flames coming out from the roof, it looked terrible.

“The important things is that the family is okay.”

A neighbour, who didn’t want to be identified said: “I could hear a buzz and at first I thought that something was wrong with my ears. We looked out and could see fire coming from a house.

“We went out to see what was going on and we could see the flames. We don’t really know how it started but other people said there were two large bangs.

“Fire engines arrived and firefighters have been on top of the roof spraying water.

“I know the family quite well. They have two boys who we think were in bed, they got them into the garden. It’s terrible what happened.”

A spokesman for the fire service said: “A number of people were in the house at the time of the fire but no one was injured.

Northamptonshire Police confirmed it was investigating the incident.
