Program turns soda bottles into charity donations

Published: July 30, 2007

Waco residents who need extra motivation to recycle may want to consider the good they could do for a local nonprofit organization.

The Talitha Koum Institute has recently started participating in a program that gives it a nickel for every 20-ounce soda bottle it collects. The institute seeks to alter the path of South Waco families mired in poverty through a therapeutic nursery for at-risk children and parent training.

The fundraiser is being headed by Waco resident and Talitha Koum supporter Judith Tye. She recently read an article about TerraCycle, a company that pays nonprofit groups for used soda bottles. TerraCycle uses the bottles to package plant food that it makes from worm manure.

Only 20-ounce bottles that contained soda are eligible for the program, Tye said. Those that contained water or are a different size won’t count.

The company prefers for the bottles to still have their caps and for the labels to be taken off. They also want them to be clean.

But Tye said she will take care of the labels and cleaning if need be, as long as she can get people to donate.
