Mom wants to thank hero senior

Published: July 30, 2007

The mother of a seven-year-old Mississauga girl says she owes “everything I have” to the 70-year-old Toronto man who saved her daughter from drowning.

“He saved my child’s life,” Ashleen Singh’s mother Ramita Singh told CityNews.ca. “I would not be here smiling today. If you’re listening out there, I owe you everything I have in this life.”

Little Ashleen is alive today thanks to the heroic efforts of Michael Barrett, 70, and now the girl’s family wants the chance to thank the heroic senior in person.

Singh was swimming with a friend on Lake Huron near Grand Bend, when she went under the water. When Barrett heard Ashleen’s screams for help he rushed into the waist-deep water and pulled her to safety.

She was unconscious for a time but was resuscitated on the shore. Barrett left before Singh’s family had the chance to thank him.

Emergency worhers said the child probably wouldn’t have made it out of the water safely if not for that if not for Barrett’s quick-thinking actions.

Meanwhile, Barrett is being recommended for a bravery citation.

“He went to her aid and brought her to shore,” Const. John Reurink of the Lambton County OPP said yesterday. “She would have drowned were it not for Mr. Barrett’s quick action. He certainly will be recommended for a civilian citation.”
