64-Year-Old Man Unlikely Hero In Foiled Robbery
Published: July 30, 2007
He wasn’t the likeliest of heroes, but a couple of alleged thugs holding up an Oshawa drug store at knife point Friday discovered they’d made a horrible mistake in underestimating him.
Roy is 64-years-old, but when he went into the local drugstore and found two men attempting to rob it, the fact that he’d been a martial arts instructor for more than 40 years was far more relevant.
The soft-spoken gentleman is a self-proclaimed gardening lover, but the sight of the two knife-wielding robbers who were allegedly terrorizing the employees was more than enough to make him grab a walking cane on display in the store and give them a free lesson when one lunged at him with a knife.
“He cannot see it coming, it’s too fast,” Roy said. “Faster than lightning.”
Another robber met with Roy’s fist, and when the police arrived one was unconscious, while the other sat quietly on the floor, merely glad to finally be getting out of there.
“When they come to cuff him and tell him to get up, he shakes his head and look up and asks me ‘Can I get up now’,” he said.
Two suspects, aged 45 and 23, are facing charges. As for the employees of this drugstore? They sent Roy some very well-deserved flowers and wine.
