Fifth-grader takes her duty on the safety patrol seriously
Published: July 13, 2007
On a bright and sunny Monday afternoon, gaggles of children pile out of Wildwood Elementary, finished with their studies and ready to head home. But for some students, the day isn’t over — because students on the safety patrol, such as fifth-grader Jessica Hicks, don’t rest until their classmates are safely on their way home.
“I get to help kids and help our school,” Jessica said of her patrol duties.
Standing at a traffic light on the corner of Alameda Circle and Central Avenue, Jessica, wearing her brightly-colored safety patrol sash, guides her peers safely through the crosswalk after school.
Jessica was the recipient of this year’s Patrolman Jack Combs Memorial Award, an award given each year to a top patrol nominee from Middletown City Schools. Jessica was nominated by teacher Sue Burns, the patrol adviser at Wildwood.
“She’s all about the kids and the safety of Wildwood kids,” Burns said, adding that Jessica is dependable.
Jessica was chosen from about 25 students on the Wildwood safety patrol for the nomination.
Students from other schools nominated for the award are: Tayler Bryant of Creekview; Justice McKnight of Highview; Kaitlyn Skidmore of Mayfield; Morgan Jamison of Rosa Parks; and Katelyn Matthiesen of Rosedale.
Jack Combs, the Middletown police officer for whom the award is named, was “the original school resource officer,” said Mike Davis, the Middletown school resource officer who oversees safety patrol. The award has been given annually since 1972. Nominees are interviewed by a panel of judges who decide the winner.
Safety patrol in Middletown schools is sponsored by the district, police, AAA Ohio Auto Club and Southwestern Ohio Safety Council, he said.
