Dog rescued by cop beneath bridge

Published: July 13, 2007

A dog rescued from a rock underneath a New York City bridge has been reunited with its owner.

Laurie Salaman of the Bronx told the New York Daily News she believes her 14-year-old pooch, Oreo, was taken from her yard and dumped in the water. Salaman lives in Throgs Neck, while the dog was found under the Bronx end of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge near Ferry Point Park.

She looked so sad, like she’d been through hell, Salaman said.

Joe Catuoso, an officer with the New York Harbor Police, rescued the dog Sunday. Salaman hopes to thank him in person.

Salaman said her daughter let Oreo out into their yard Saturday afternoon. The yard is fenced with a locked gate and she said the dog had never tried to escape from it.

She located her Sunday at the Manhattan Animal Care shelter, where she was reunited with her wet and filthy pet.
