Class ring found, returned after 40 years

Published: July 10, 2007

After nearly 40 years, Jim Setzer and his Metro East high school class ring finally have their reunion.

The 1968 graduate of Cahokia High School had given his ring to his girlfriend, then lost track of it after the relationship ended and he was sent to Vietnam in 1969.

But an archaeological excavation team found the ring in two pieces at an old baseball field in Cahokia and returned it to Setzer this week.

The field was near a Catholic church Setzer and his girlfriend had attended.

With help from school records, a Cahokia High School librarian managed to track down Setzer through initials on the ring’s band.

Setzer says he was shocked to hear that someone found the ring, which a Belleville jewelry store is fixing for free.
