Hero struck gun raider over head

A GULF War veteran who tried to hold up a shop with a toy gun was caught by a have-a-go hero.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that Brian Docherty was chased by customer James Strachan, 41, and smashed over the head three times with a broom handle.

Docherty told police: “I deserved it.” The 39-year-old, of Sandyfield Road, Glasgow, bought the toy gun before carrying out two armed robbery bids within five minutes.

He admitted threatening staff at Cheque and Pawn in Victoria Road, Glasgow, and McCall’s Newsagents in Calder Street, Glasgow, both on February 28 this year.

Docherty, who served in the first Gulf War has post traumatic stress disorder, was jailed for four years in 1999 for assault to severe injury.

Lady Smith deferred sentence.
