Bike riders hold car wash for charity

Published: July 9, 2007

April Weston thought of a close friend when the Clayton County-based Unrestricted Ryders Motorcycle Club was trying to find an organization to sponsor with it’s second annual car and bike wash.

The club’s leaders sat down in February and began brainstorming, when Weston mentioned Weavers Gardens in College Park, where her friend got help starting her life over.

Her friend had been a victim of domestic violence, and was thrown out of the home she shared with her boyfriend while she was pregnant.

She had no close family living in the area, and eventually found herself under the care of staff members at Weaver Gardens, who set her up in a studio apartment and covered her living expenses while she worked and attended college.

Unrestricted Ryders will hold a car wash to sponsor Weaver Gardens from 9 a.m., to 4 p.m., on June 9 at Cycle Specialty, 104 Kenwood Rd., Fayetteville.

“We’re trying to raise at least $10,000,” said Weston, the riding club’s secretary. “That’s in both cash donations and donations of kitchen, bathroom and bedroom items.”

Weaver Gardens is a division of Family First, which helps people get their lives on track when they have no where else to turn. In return for covering the living expenses for two years, the person receiving help must get a job and work, go to school, or do both.

In addition, the person receiving the help must give a small amount of their paycheck, roughly $50 per month, back to Weaver Gardens to help cover some of the costs.

“We’re just giving back [to Weaver Gardens] because of what people like my friend have gone through,” Weston said. “We just want to make sure they have the money to keep doing what they’re doing.”

Last year, the group raised money for victims of Hurricane Katrina during the inaugural car and bike wash. Weston said the goal is to sponsor a different group or organization each year.

Three other fundraisers are currently on the drawing board for the coming months, but Weston said dates have not been confirmed for those events, yet.
