Sydney tollways collecting for charity

Published: July 5, 2007

Every dollar collected at three of Sydney’s major tollways on Tuesday, May 22 was donated to charity.

The operators of the Eastern Distributor, the M4 and M5 motorways, said they expected to raise more than $700,000.

The proceeds will go to seven charities, including OzHarvest, which delivers food to the needy, Police and Community Youth Clubs, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and the cancer charity CanTeen.

Rex Wright is the Managing Director of Interlink Roads, which operates the M5.

He says the “Drive for Charity” day is popular among motorists.

“We expect to raise over $700,000 dollars so each of the seven charities that we support will collect over one hundred thousand dollars,” he said.

“This is the sixth time that Sydney’s motorways have held the event and $3 million dollars has been donated to charity so far. ”

Mr Wright says many drivers donate more than the normal toll.

“On occasions, the electronic customers throw coins out the door as they’re driving by, and the other customers pass on a little bit more cash to the toll collectors,” he said.
