10-year-old faces emergency, becomes 911 Hero
Published: July 4, 2007
During an emergency it is important to stay calm. It isn’t always easy especially for someone who is 10-years-old. Madison Westbrook, however, proved how it can be done as she kept her composure during a very stressful time when her grandmother needed medical attention, and Madison was the one who go it for her.
In April, Madison went to stay with her grandmother, Ruth Hines, for spring break. She said her grandmother had breathing problems, which seemed to get worse one day- so much so that Madison knew something wasn’t right.
The small girl called her mother at work and told her that her grandmother was having difficulty breathing. Madison’s mother, Nancy Westbrook, told her daughter to keep an eye on her grandmother and let her know if it gets worse.
Madison said it did get worse and she called her mother back, who immediately notified the Emergency Communications Center (ECC), telling them of the problem.
The ECC dispatched an ambulance and paramedics called Madison at her grandmother’s house, asking her to give them information about her grandmother’s condition. Madison said it was very scary but she knew she had to stay calm because she learned in school that during an emergency you had to be calm.
Madison said every once in a while she would go into the other room at her grandmothers’ house and hug her bear and cry, but when she returned to her grandmother she would stop because she didn’t want to scare her.
Interim Director Judy Toombs of the Emergency Communications Center presented Madison with a recognition plaque and t-shirt at a recent Fiscal Court meeting. Toombs said Madison was a 911 Hero.
Madison is the daughter of Joe and Nancy Westbrook of Russellville.
