Woman Loses 150 Pounds On Prayer Diet

Published: July 2, 2007

Millions of dollars are spent every year in the U.S. on diets. But there’s actually a national program where people are losing weight without ever going on a diet and without ever giving up a thing.

NewsChannel5 anchor Ted Henry reported that dieters are replacing thoughts of cheeseburgers and ice cream with God.

Gwen Shamblin, the creator of the Weigh Down Diet, said it is actually no diet at all. She believes eating excessively is an attempt to fill a deeper hunger that only God can fill.

“More food just makes you nauseated. It ruins your kidneys. It’s a slow death. It’s suicide,” said Shamblin.

Henry said her concept is simple — eat when hungry, don’t eat when not, and when you feel like eating anyway, turn to God instead.

Cathrine Rector weighed 280 pounds. Then she tried Shamblin’s way to losing weight and lost 150 pounds.

Instead of concentrating on food, she said she focused on God.

“Food doesn’t rule my life anymore. I live life now,” said Rector.

The Weigh Down Diet workshop is located in the city of Nashville. It started in the year 1989, and so far more than 1 million people have benefited from the program, Henry reported.

Shamblin knows she comes off being not just passionate, but somewhat eccentric and very religious as a crusader against fat.
