Miracle dog healing after flop onto road
Published: June 18, 2007
Sophia the cockapoo is one lucky pooch.
When the 2-year-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix jumped out of a car going 55 mph on Southwestern Boulevard in Orchard Park on Monday, landing in the middle of the highway, it looked like curtains for the cute dog.
However, noticing Sophia had jumped ship, her owner, Dan Suffoletta, visiting Buffalo from Washington, D.C., quickly turned around and scooped her up.
“I panicked, I just freaked out,” said Suffoletta. “All I could see was her rolling on the pavement.”
After leaving her at the Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center, Suffoletta returned to find Sophia stable, though one of her hips had been dislocated.
Sophia returned for surgery on Wednesday, and while she heals, she’ll be rolled around in a “doggy stroller.”
“She looks like a little child,” joked Suffoletta of the canine contraption.
Suffoletta, who is originally from West Seneca and had returned from his 30-year home in Washington to look at potential area homes and attend his sister’s 50th birthday party, said he’s surprised Sophia made it.
“She’s kind of a miracle dog,” he said.
A representative at the Orchard Park Veterinarian Center said such cases are rare, but not unheard of.
“I wouldn’t say it’s common, but it doesn’t never happen,” she said.
