Rescue team saves dog trapped between bridge and building

Published: June 12, 2007

A dog that became trapped between a building rooftop and a bridge girder apparently after falling from an elevated rail line in Osaka was returned to safety after a two-hour effort by a rescue team on Monday.

Rescuers said they received an emergency call at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, informing them that the dog was trapped. A rescue squad of about 10 members arrived at the scene in Osaka’s Higashisumiyoshi-ku and managed to rescue the dog after about two hours, drawing applause from spectators watching the ordeal.

Officials said the dog had been spotted in the area on the morning of the same day, and was reportedly trapped in the spot between the bridge girder and the building rooftop for over half a day.

A local resident said a high school girl on her way to school spotted the dog on a photo studio rooftop at about 5:30 a.m. on Monday. About 12 hours later another high school girl returning home spotted the dog and told the owner of the photo studio, who contacted police.

Since trains were running at the time, rescuers were unable to get to the dog from the train tracks, so they used a ladder to climb to the top of the building, and tried to capture the dog with poles and a bag, but the dog became frightened and their efforts failed.

A worker from a local health and welfare center then turned up with a tool that had a collar fixed to the end of it, and rescuers used this to pull the dog toward them.

The dog was not injured, and was taken into the custody of the welfare center. Officials said a search would be made for the dog’s owner.
