Life-saving boy hailed as hero

Published: June 8, 2007

A Horry County boy who risked his life to save two children from a fire is being hailed as a hero. For his family, a fire several years ago claimed one life, but this time a 10 year old was there.

Winfred Sherman is a hero. The plaque he got from Horry County Fire Rescue on Thursday says so, but the Daisy Elementary School fourth grader is shy about telling you what he did.

In April, Winfred, his younger brother Milik, and their baby cousin were asleep in a home on Redenbo Lane when a candle started a fire. Winfred got Milik out okay. Milik picks up the story, “And I said Winfred go back and get the baby, and he went back to get him. And he hit the wall and burned his head right here (hits his forehead).”

Winfred was taken to a burn center in Georgia, and Horry County Fire Rescue says he is lucky, because they tell everyone never go back inside a burning home.

Winfred says, “I just know I had to go back in and get the little baby.”

The boys’ mother, Carrie Ann Jackson, says they were supposed to be at her sister’s house with an adult. “We was at a little party down the road, and they went back home with my sister’s friend.” But police say that friend left the boys home alone.

Jackson says, “I got to the house, the house was done destroyed, but I thought my kids were burned up in the house too.”

Jackson says it brought back terrible memories of when her oldest son died in a house fire. “He had went the weekend to stay with his father, and he didn’t never come back home.”

Jackson says she is happy about what her sons have learned. Winfred says, “Don’t leave a candle on when you are gone.” Milik adds, “Do not touch and do not mess with matches.”

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Kenyada Antonio Alford, the man they say left the children home alone.
