Happy homecoming for 4 yo who almost drowned
Published: June 1, 2007
Many people in the Burgess Community of Horry County call it a miracle story. A four year old boy returned home after almost drowning last week. Neighbors, family, friends, and all those who helped save his life, joined for a big welcome home celebration Thursday night.
With cheers, tears, hugs, and a visit from rescue workers, dozens
of people gathered outside a home on Brighton Avenue, Thursday.
“We’re here to celebrate a miracle that’s happened, and a lot of people had a lot to do with this boy’s surviving,” said neighbor Barry Sertl.
4 year old Dylon was at the bottom of a pond. He was underwater for almost 12 minutes before he was pulled to safety. Three 13 year old boys out playing heard the call for help. The three boys devised a plan to get the four year old out of the water. One called 911, another went for an adult, and the other stopped cars for help.
“We heard some kid yelling help,” said Jacob Myers, “So we turned and skated to see what was going on, and the kid told us his brother was drowning.”
“I was freaking out and I got, I didn’t know what was going on,” said Nick Monteith, “I was just thinking of what to do, how to help him.”
“I called the cops, and then Jacob stopped all the cars and Nick went and got my parents,” added Mat Davison.
Patrick Waddell is a builder in the development who was driving by. He’d just learned CPR and started using the techniques he’d just learned.
“I stopped and I assessed, Just, I don’t know why, I did it, rather than just tearing into the pond, that’s your first instinct. I said I have to find a clue,” said Waddell.
He found a clue that lead rescuers to the little boy, and Patrick began CPR, just as the rescue teams arrived to take him to the hospital.
Rescue official remind us that it only takes a split second for a child to get in trouble in the water, and they advise you to get your kids swimming lessons.
