Third-grader saves brother, 2, from going under truck

A third-grader at Albany Street Elementary in Utica is being called a hero after she put herself in the path of an oncoming truck to save her brother’s life Tuesday evening.
Madison Yesford, 8, is in the pediatric intensive care unit at University Hospital in Syracuse, her mother, Jennifer Clive, said Wednesday.
Clive’s son, Matthew, 2, is in fair condition at the hospital and only suffered a few minor injuries, she said.
“I’m so proud of her,” Clive said. “She’s our hero.”
Utica police said Asim Huskic, 38, of Utica was driving his truck around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when he struck two children in front of 1249 Mohawk St.
The cause of the accident still is under investigation, but neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the accident, Sgt. Lori Ann Cozza said.
“I believe the younger child was going after his cat, and his sister followed behind him, trying to catch up to him,” Cozza said.
Huskic has not been charged, but the case still is under investigation and charges may be pending, police said.
Mark Colosimo, who is Clive’s landlord, said Clive and he were talking after work Tuesday while the kids were playing around them.
“It happened in a split second. … As soon as we heard the boom, we were down the driveway,” Colosimo said. “It was really heroic on the little girl’s part.”
Clive said doctors told her Madison must have physically lifted Matthew off the ground. If she hadn’t, then Matthew would’ve gone underneath the truck.
“That’s the only way she could’ve taken the hit that she did,” Clive said. “She’s got a broken collarbone and half her face is so swollen. She can’t even open her eye. They said it’s a miracle; she has no internal bleeding and all the tests came back good.”
