Hero dog saves his pal

Published: May 25, 2007

Scrumpy the Collie is being hailed a hero this week after his barking alerted neighbours to his canine pal’s predicament.

For eight-week-old Pyrenean puppy Charlie had got his head stuck in the wrought-iron gate at his home in St Matthew’s Close, Rowde, last Thursday.

Neighbours came running to see what was up when two-year-old Scrumpy kicked up a fuss.

They called 999 and a crew from the Devizes fire station were soon on the scene and cut Charlie free.

Owner Clive Dobson said: “Scrumpy is the hero. If he hadn’t started barking and alerted everyone, poor little Charlie could have suffocated.

“The neighbours were great. They tried greasing Charlie’s head but they couldn’t budge him. I think, because of the size of his ears, he managed to get his head through the gap, but couldn’t get back.”

Mr Dobson’s daughters, six-year-old Izzy and Amy, three, were relieved that lovable Charlie survived his ordeal with just some some missing fur.
