Frisbee-like devices to aid in rescues

Published: May 25, 2007

The City of Norwich Fire and Police Departments have recently received a new water rescue device. Each Norwich police car and fire department first response vehicle are now equipped with a rescue disc, according to Police Chief Joseph Angelino.

The disc looks familiar to an oversized Frisbee, but has a nylon rope attached. It is easily and accurately thrown up to 100 feet and gives a person in the water a flotation device and safety line.

The units were purchased in the wake of the experiences both departments underwent during rescue efforts in the 2006 flooding, Angelino said. “It was during this time a need was realized for a quicker response to a person in trouble in the water. It’s simple, inexpensive, lightweight, and if a person has ever thrown a Frisbee they can thrown this disk,” he said.

Police and firemen have received training with the discs this week on the banks of the Chenango River and on the Greenbelt Walkway. They will continue to do so until each can throw the device a sufficient distance.
