Police rescue moose calf

Published: May 23, 2007

Two Ottawa women suffered minor injuries in a collision that killed a moose and orphaned a newborn calf.

Sudbury OPP officers were dispatched to a collision on Highway 17 near the Vermillion River Bridge on Thursday night.

Police arrived on the scene to find the moose was killed on impact and a calf a few feet away. Officers originally believed the impact caused the unborn calf to be delivered. Firefighters looked after the calf overnight and handed it over to the Ministry of Natural Resources in the morning.

The calf, who was named Lucky, is now being cared for at the Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre in Walden.

“He’s in excellent condition,” Dr. Rod Jouppi said Friday.

“I think he’s going to be fine.”
