Security Guard Throws Himself Into Harm’s Way To Stop Robbery
Published: May 15, 2007
A hero’s actions on Monday nearly got him killed. Police said a man jumped onto a moving vehicle to try to stop a robbery, and ended up critically injured.
Awali Khouroupra was trying to save the day. Now doctors are trying to save his life. A security guard literally jumped into action to stop a crew of brazen burglars.
“He tried to get the people to stop,” witness John Francisco said.
Store manager Davindra Dhanpaul tried to explain what happened.
“Somebody took clothes,” Dhanpaul said. “They stole something and they ran to the back. They think they’re gonna get away. But he spotted them. He chased after them.”
Witnesses said the Good Samaritan leaped onto fleeing burglars’ van, but he was thrown from the speeding getaway vehicle.
The security guard’s brother confronted the manager, who kept the clothing store open while the hero was fighting for his life at Jamaica Hospital.
“We’re gonna boycott,” one person said. “We’re gonna boycott because it’s not right.”
The brother than confronted the store’s manager over an apparent callous decision to go on with business as usual.
“You need to close the store man,” the brother said.
“I’m gonna close it. Don’t worry,” the manager said.
“This brother came for you. He run for you,” the brother responded.
“Listen …” the manager tried to explain.
“The car hit him!” the brother said, cutting him off.
Picture the view if you were behind the wheel. The suspect trying to make a getaway and then slamming into the security guard. The four suspects are still at large and the NYPD is asking the public for help in solving this crime.
The NYPD may also have a partial plate of the van in question.
