Mother and son in blaze rescue

Published: May 10, 2007

A MOTHER and son were trapped in a bedroom after a blaze broke out at their Seaforth home.

The 39-year-old woman and 12-year-old boy screamed for help from the window as the flames engulfed the dining room at the property on Rossini Street last Thursday.

They were woken at 7am by a smoke detector alerting them to the fire.

A 41-year-old man was able to escape the house and raise the alarm.

Firefighters from Bootle and Crosby found the panic-stricken pair shouting from the upstairs window.

Using breathing apparatus, they went into the house and led them through the dense smoke to safety.

They were both treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics before going to the nearby home of relatives to recover.

The fire is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault in a ground floor room.

Watch manager Tony McDonald said: “If this family had not had a smoke alarm fitted, this incident could have been worse.

“The alarm alerted them to the danger and gave the family vital extra minutes in which to act.

“The family’s dog and cat were also rescued but a pet tortoise didn’t make it.”
