Rescued fox cub finds life’s a hoot

Published 9 May. 2007

THEIR friendship could easily have come straight from the pages of a fairytale book but Rusty the fox cub and Olivia the baby owl really are TWOO of a kind.

They have palled up at a rescue centre after each was found being attacked by predatory birds at just a few days old.

Tiny Rusty was found cowering from three magpies who were swooping down on him in woodland.

The elderly couple who found him while walking their dog took him to the Heronfield Animal Rescue Centre near Knowle.

And Olivia the tawny owl was brought to the same centre after tumbling from her nest and being attacked by crows.

Receptionists from the nearby Wroxall Abbey hotel were walking to work when they noticed the crows circling above Olivia, who suffered a scratch to her left eye.

Now the pair, who staff think are aged four or five weeks, have become the best of friends.

Olivia hops over to Rusty and cuddles up to him while the fox cub gently nuzzles her back.

Mitch Withey, who runs the rescue centre, said: “In their natural environment they’d never get to be so close.”
