Meet this 10-year-old hero!

Published: May 3, 2007

An Illinois boy is being hailed as a hero Wednesday night. Ten-year-old Steven Tice Bravely sprung into action when he was in a car accident in Mt. Carmel with his mom Tuesday, and he may have saved her life.

On Tuesday morning Steven’s mom was driving him to school and hit some loose gravel on Route 1120 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The SUV ran off the road and flipped at least twice landing on the roof.

His mom, Brandy Keele, was hurt. “It was hard for me to breathe at first, and Steven was asking if I was ok. And he wanted to know where my cell phone was, and, of course, we couldn’t find my cell phone, and he said he was going to go for help.”

Steven placed his 2-year-old brother next to his mom, so she could calm him down, and he crawled out the broken back window to get help a mile away. “I ran all the way to some farmer’s house that lives by our house. Then, I knocked on the door and told her there’s an emergency down the road; my mom’s been in a crash and my brother. Then, I ran to my grandma’s house and told her.”

And it’s a good thing he got help so quickly. His mom suffered three crushed vertebrae and a torn ligament and was taken by LifeFlight to Deaconess Hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery. “He did it all on his own. [I’m] very proud of him. He’s my little hero.”

Steven is taking it all in stride. He says he learned what to do at a safety day at school. “Don’t panic when something happens like that.”

And his answer to why he acted so quickly to help his mom and brother is simple. “Because I care about them.”

Steven’s mom, Brandy, may have to undergo surgery to repair her back and will have to wear a brace for several months, but she’s hoping to leave the hospital in a few days.
