Woman Says Vaccine Cured Her Cancer
Published: May 2, 2007
Can a vaccine keep cancer from coming back? There’s one being tested that has already shown success, according to researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center in California.
Researchers there said the vaccine’s best for preventing certain cancers from coming back.
Olga Gunn survived lymphatic cancer, a disease that turned up in her system almost a decade ago.
“I felt under my arm and there was this lump,” she said.
So Gunn turned to an experimental vaccine that is injected under the skin to tell the immune system to attack cancer cells.
“My feeling was, what’ve I got to lose?” she said.
The vaccine worked for Gunn, but it didn’t work well in older patients.
Scientists are now doing animal research on an improved version.
The next step is to try the new vaccine in humans, and that’s where Gunn hopes to inspire patients like her, to give it a try.
“I felt like I had beat cancer, and after that, you can do anything,” she said.
