Crews rescue 71yo from olive machine

Emergency crews say an elderly woman is lucky to be alive after becoming stuck in machinery at an Adelaide business this morning.
The 71-year-old woman’s right leg became stuck in an auger at the Maroudas olive press business in Thebarton around 8am ACST.
Her husband heard her screams for help and quickly shut off the power supply at the Cawthorne Street business.
Ambulance Service spokesman Paul Clark says fire and State Emergency Service crews took more than an hour to find a safe way to cut her free from the machine.
“She was in some distress,” Mr Clark said.
“We were continuing to provide pain relief for her and that was alleviating her distress considerably, but as you can imagine, if you fracture your leg, it does hurt.”
He says the woman has been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and is in a stable condition.
“She’s a very lucky lady,” he said.
“She has sustained some narrow leg fractures isolated to her right leg.
“It could have been a lot worse. Her right leg was entrapped in an auger which was moving…
“I believe she was performing some maintenance at the time.”
