Children explore lifesaving charity box
Published: May 2, 2007
A £500 box packed with a tent, 10 sleeping bags and life-saving tools is helping youngsters discover the impact of disasters on people around the world.
Primary school pupils have been learning about the impact of floods, earthquakes and storms and investigating the work of disaster relief charity ShelterBox as part of its national awareness campaign.
Based in Cornwall, it was launched in 2001 and has provided emergency accommodation in the form of ’shelter boxes’ for an estimated 430,000 people.
A team from the international charity visited Moorland Primary in Splott, Cardiff, as part its national tour.
Primaries in Tremorfa and Splott were put in touch with the charity through Willows High, which has supported ShelterBox in recent years.
The charity is hoping its school visits will encourage more youngsters to support its latest fundraising campaign to provide shelter for one million displaced people in Africa in the next five years.
