Brother rescues boy from burning Fontana home

Published: May 1, 2007

A 19-year-old rescued his 9-year-old brother Friday morning from a burning house in Fontana by prying the security bars off a window and carrying the boy to safety, officials said.

Seven family members were inside the home in the 8200 block of Concord Avenue when it caught fire at 4 a.m., said San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez. None of their names were released.

Family members became aware of the fire when it woke up the 19-year-old man, who suffered a burned foot, she said. The home’s occupants all escaped on their own, except for the boy, who became trapped, Martinez said.

“He was screaming for his mother,” she said.

His brother and 26-year-old uncle climbed back in through a window to retrieve him.

The boy and his rescuers were taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment of smoke inhalation. Their conditions were unknown Friday afternoon.

Thirty firefighters knocked down the blaze in 40 minutes, but the house was destroyed. Firefighters were hampered by live power lines brought down by the fire in the backyard, Martinez said.

The loss, including contents, was estimated at $130,000.

The cause of the fire was unclear, Martinez said.
