An Unlikely Hero
Published: May 1, 2007
arla Dulaney called us in to share an amazing story. Last week, her home in Mackinaw went up in flames. If not for her best friend of 12 years, Darla says she would have died in the fire.
All that’s left of Darla’s life: blackened keepsakes and ash-filled memories. The nightmare of the fire still haunts her after losing her best friend, Shelby. Shelby sacrificed herself to save Darla.
“I really miss her. I feel so empty without her,” Darla says.
The fire burned for nearly three hours. It started at midnight. Without warning from her smoke detectors, smoke filled Darla’s bedroom. Her husband, Michael, got out first and thought his wife was behind him. But she wasn’t. Darla was lost in the darkness.
“I couldn’t see - I didn’t even know where I was really,” she recalls. That’s when Shelby grabbed Darla. “She was breathing and hacking and coughing right along with me.”
After guiding Darla to the door, Shelby went back into the home to search for Michael, not knowing he had already gotten out.
Shelby was no ordinary hero. She was Darla’s dog.
“She loved baths, she loved to play.”
After losing everything she has, Darla just wants to let you know about her friend of 12 years. A hero who gave her life. A friend forever.
Darla tells us investigators believe the fire started in the walls of her sunroom, and was probably electrical in nature.
