Father Of 11 Wins $1 Million In Lottery

Published: April 26, 2007

A man with 11 foster children won $1 million from the Georgia Lottery, money he said he’ll use for his family.

Gary Durham, 54, of Monroe bought the winning scratch-off ticket at a gas station, lottery officials announced Wednesday.

“I looked at it and wondered if my eyes were focusing right,” he said. “I never did turn any flips, but I wanted to.”

The maintenance worker for Walton County Parks and Recreation rushed home to surprise his wife, Daphane, who he said responded with breathless excitement.

Durham and his wife — a Baptist minister — have 11 children at home. All of the children came to the Durhams as foster children. Durham said they have now adopted three of the children.

Besides spending the money on his children, Durham said he hopes to remodel his house and save as much money as possible.

Monroe is 41 miles east of Atlanta.
