Thirsty Neighbor Helps Rescue Fire Victims

Published: April 24, 2007

It’s a good thing Jose Olivares woke up at 3 a.m. to grab a glass of water. That’s when he saw his neighbors’ house going up in flames.

Jose told News 4 the fire at the home on Devine Street was so bright, he thought it was daytime and time for work. He ran to the burning home and started banging on windows and doors to wake up Joe Amaya and his father.

The two men escaped their burning home without serious injuries. Joe Amaya suffered minor burns to his face when he ran back into the home to try to get his computer.

The fire destroyed the near-century old home and most of the family’s belongings. With no insurance, the Amaya family will have to figure out how to move on.
