Neighbors Rescue 2-Year-Old From Burning House
Published: April 24, 2007
A 2-year-old child was safe early Saturday after some brave neighbors formed a “human ladder” to rescue her from a burning building, fire officials said.
Flames broke out in a row-home on the 800 block of North 42nd Street just after 1 a.m.
Three people had to be rescued, including the 2-year-old girl.
Two neighbors allowed a third neighbor to stand on their shoulders in order to rescue the child from the home.
“The lady was getting ready to throw the baby out the window. So, we all went over there. They boost me up, and I caught the baby out the window and brought her down and gave it to a neighbor across the street,” said one of the rescuers, Orange Lee Jenkins.
Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the mother and one other person.
The fire department credited a working smoke detector with helping to get everyone out alive.
