Rescued Elephant Seals Arrive At San Francisco Zoo
Published: April 23, 2007
Officials at the San Francisco Zoo welcomed some new arrivals for a special exhibit Monday.
For the second consecutive year, the zoo will serve as a temporary home for a group of rescued elephant seals from the marine mammal center in Sausalito, California.
The collaboration started in 2006 when a group of elephant seals were transported to the San Francisco Zoo due to a shortage of pen and pool space at the marine mammal center.
The zoo will provide swimming and recuperation for the elephant seals.
The elephant seals will remain at the San Francisco Zoo for three to four weeks before being released into the sea.
Future groups of elephant seals will be transferred to the San Francisco Zoo in order to free up space at the marine mammal center for more critical patients.
